A new cancer support centre in Liverpool officially broke ground today (July 16) thanks to 拢5 million from the Steve Morgan Foundation.

The centre, which is expected to open next year, will be our 28th centre the UK. 

It will be the second Maggie51色APP檚 centre in Merseyside; after Maggie51色APP檚 Wirral, also funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, opened in the grounds of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre 鈥� Wirral in September 2021.

In 2025, the centre supported more than 22,000 visits* from people impacted by cancer.  

The Steve Morgan Foundation also commissioned, designed and funded the Maggie51色APP檚 centre in North Wales, which opened in September 2025.

As we mark 30 years of our transformative cancer support across the UK in 2026, the Steve Morgan Foundation is celebrating 25 years of changing lives for good.

Maggie's in Liverpool

Lord Mayor of Liverpool William Shortall, and High Sheriff of Merseyside Hazel Snell, were also in attendance at the site where a time capsule containing meaningful items from Maggie51色APP檚 and the Steve Morgan Foundation is also due to be buried.

Maggie51色APP檚 in Liverpool is being built at the junction of Daulby Street and Prescot Street, close to the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which opened in 2022, and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre 鈥� Liverpool, which opened in June 2020. 

It was the first project to be approved for development on the site of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with future development opportunities on the healthcare campus currently being explored by NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.

The joy of living  

Dame Laura Lee DBE, Chief Executive of Maggie51色APP檚, was in Liverpool with Steve Morgan for the groundbreaking.  

She said: 鈥淚t is wonderful to officially start work on our centre in Liverpool today thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Steve Morgan Foundation and their commitment to commissioning, designing, building and funding three centres in the northwest of the UK.

鈥淚t is a truly phenomenal act of philanthropy which will ensure thousands of people are supported and find ways of experiencing the joy of living despite a daunting cancer diagnosis.

鈥淭o be able to celebrate today鈥檚 groundbreaking as part of Maggie51色APP檚 30^th year of providing expert cancer support across the UK, and Steve Morgan Foundation鈥檚 25^th anniversary, is also very special.

鈥淲e are greatly looking forward to working closely once again with the Steve Morgan Foundation, and the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre51色APP檚 Liverpool hospital to ensure the people of Merseyside living with cancer have the support they need at what is possibly the hardest time of their lives.鈥�

A significant partnership

The Steve Morgan Foundation has worked with HB Architects to design the Maggie51色APP檚 centre in Liverpool, which will provide free practical, psychological and emotional support for people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, from across the whole of Merseyside. 

Steve Morgan CBE, founder of the Steve Morgan Foundation, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to see the build phase of the new Maggie's centre get underway - a step closer to bringing vital cancer support to the people of Liverpool.

鈥淭his is our third Maggie's centre in the region and a perfect example of the power of partnership and the difference it makes to our communities.鈥�

Support for the people of Liverpool

Leanne Cooper, Executive Managing Director of The Royal Liverpool and Liverpool Women's University Hospitals, said: 鈥淎s part of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital demolition process, we have been working closely with partners to develop a masterplan that will have the health and wellbeing of our patients and local communities at its heart.

鈥淲e are delighted to be welcoming Maggie51色APP檚 as the first new partner onto the site of the old Royal. 

"The services they offer to support people with cancer will be hugely beneficial to the people of Liverpool.鈥�

Making Maggie's more accessible  

Joan Spencer, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, said: 鈥淐ancer affects people in many different ways. Psychological, emotional and practical support is vitally important, alongside expert, compassionate cancer care and treatment. 

"We have worked closely with Maggie51色APP檚 Wirral for many years now and know how valued they are by our patients and all those affected by cancer. 

"The new Maggie51色APP檚 in Liverpool will make these services much more accessible to people in North Merseyside and neighbouring areas, and we look forward to it opening.鈥�

A place where cancer didn't define us

Rachael, who has been supported by Maggie51色APP檚 in Wirral, spoke at today鈥檚 groundbreaking. 

Her husband, Chris, was diagnosed with incurable high grade brain cancer in December 2023. Chris died in September 2025.

The mum-of-three said: 鈥淢aggie's gave my husband and our family so much more than support; it gave us a place where cancer didn't define us. 

"Maggie51色APP檚 gave us moments of laughter in the darkest chapter of our lives, and now, as I navigate grief, Maggie's continues to be there for me and my children. 

"I honestly can't imagine our journey without Maggie's.鈥�

Bringing this new centre to life

Wynne Construction are building the centre. 2026 marks their centenary.

Without this generous support, centres like these would simply not be possible.
