Proposed design for the new Maggie's in Liverpool

The new Maggie51色APP檚 cancer support centre is set to be built in Liverpool with 拢5 million from the Steve Morgan Foundation.

Planning permission has been granted for the centre, which will be commissioned, designed, and funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation.

The new Maggie's centre will be located at the junction of Daulby Street and Prescot Street, which is close to the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which opened in 2022, and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre 鈥 Liverpool, which opened in June 2020.

This is the first project to be approved for development on the site of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with future development opportunities on the healthcare campus currently being explored by NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.

Supporting the people of Merseyside and beyond

The Steve Morgan Foundation has worked with HB Architects to design the centre, which will provide free practical, psychological and emotional support for people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, from across Merseyside.

Of the 2.8 million people in Cheshire and Merseyside, about 17,000 people are newly diagnosed with cancer every year 鈥 which is higher than the England average.

This will be the second Maggie51色APP檚 centre in Merseyside; Maggie51色APP檚 Wirral, also funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, opened in 2021. Maggie51色APP檚 Liverpool is expected to open in 2027.

I couldn't wait to come back to Maggie's

The new centre will support people like Chris, 39, who is living with incurable cancer, and his wife Rachael, also 39, who visit Maggie's in Wirral together.

Chris said: 鈥淚 lost so much, it had all been taken away from me. But Maggie51色APP檚 made me feel warm and accepted. I was listened to.

鈥淚 have done some courses where, for that hour, I forgot everything 鈥 an hour of normality.鈥

Rachael added: 鈥淚 had been told to go to Maggie51色APP檚 for information, but they gave us so much more.

鈥淚 left Maggie51色APP檚 for the first time feeling strange, like I couldn鈥檛 wait to come back with Chris. I always hear laughter from the room where Chris is in at Maggie51色APP檚, and it warms my heart 鈥 that鈥檚 thanks to Maggie51色APP檚.鈥

Third Maggie's centre built by The Steve Morgan Foundation

Dame Laura Lee DBE, our Chief Executive, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to have been granted planning permission for our centre in Liverpool.

鈥淭he Steve Morgan Foundation鈥檚 incredibly generous support in commissioning, designing, funding and building has fast tracked our ability to bring Maggie51色APP檚 to Liverpool, and for that I am so grateful.

鈥淭he Steve Morgan Foundation has committed to building three Maggie51色APP檚 centres 鈥 including the one in Liverpool 鈥 which is a truly phenomenal act of philanthropy.

鈥淚 am greatly looking forward to working closely once again with the Steve Morgan Foundation, and NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, to ensure the people of Merseyside living with cancer have the support they need at possibly the hardest time of their lives.鈥

The power of collaboration

The Steve Morgan Foundation has already commissioned, designed, built and funded Maggie51色APP檚, Wirral, which officially opened in the grounds of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre 鈥 Wirral in September 2021.

Last year alone, Maggie51色APP檚 Wirral supported people more than 18,000 times.

The Steve Morgan Foundation has also built Maggie51色APP檚 North Wales, which is due to open in September 2025.

Steve Morgan, founder of the Steve Morgan Foundation, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to have received planning approval for our third Maggie51色APP檚 centre in the region, helping to bring vital cancer support to the people of Liverpool and ensuring they have easy access to the warm, welcoming and free expert support that a Maggie51色APP檚 centre provides.

鈥淥ur partnership with Maggie51色APP檚 highlights the power of collaboration and the Foundation鈥檚 ability to 鈥榞ive51色APP well by harnessing our expertise, practical support and commercial experience to maximise the impact of our financial support.鈥

The health and wellbeing of the community at the heart of the project

James Sumner, Chief Executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, said: 鈥淎s part of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital demolition process, we have been working closely with partners to develop a masterplan that will have the health and wellbeing of our patients and local communities at its heart.

鈥淲e are delighted to be welcoming Maggie51色APP檚 as the first new partner onto the site of the old Royal. The services they offer to support people with cancer will be hugely beneficial to the people of Liverpool.鈥
