Nearly 170,000 Scottie sculptures ‘collected’ in first half of Maggie51ɫAPPs art trail

166,274 giant Scottie sculptures have been ‘collected’ by people in the first 5 weeks of the Scotties in the City art trail, which is being run by Maggie's as a fund and awareness raiser.
There have also been more than 2000 miles walked by individuals or groups taking part in the trail (who have downloaded the app), and more than 75,000 rewards collected.
Currently the most collected Scottie is Tenement Scottie, on Buchanan Street, while the most voted for Scottie is Duke, the Scottie with a cone on his head outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
The purpose behind the art trail
The Scotties in the City art trail is being presented by and is in support of Maggie51ɫAPPs, which marks 30 years of transformative cancer care across the UK, including at centres in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.
Project Manager for Maggie's Hayley Smith said: “Glasgow has really taken the Scotties to their heart. It is just wonderful to see the buzz they are creating around the city and hear stories of how far people have travelled to see them.
I am amazed, but not totally surprised as they look incredible, and it is a fantastic way to get outside during the summer holidays.
“They are of course also helping to raise awareness of Maggie51ɫAPPs, and the fact that the Scotties will help raise vital funds for Maggie51ɫAPPs to help them to provide free, expert support for as many people as possible facing cancer makes taking part in the Scotties in the City art trail extra special.”
The art trail was launched on June 18 by Maggie51ɫAPPs Honorary Patron and broadcaster Kirsty Wark and the city’s Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren.
Community meets culture
As well as the 40 giant Scotties to be found around the city, there also 52 smaller Scotties also beautifully designed by schools, nurseries and community groups can also be found in Glasgow libraries and in Buchanan Galleries. People have come from far and wide to see the beautifully designed sculptures, from Ireland and Cornwall to Russia and Switzerland.
Using the ‘Scotties in the City’ app (available on and for free) is the best way to experience the trail. From the app, trail users can use the map to find the Scotties, 'collect' them by entering the unlock codes, find out about the sculptures, artists and sponsors, and earn rewards too.
They can also find out about the difference they are making by supporting Maggie's, with information about and join other .
The sculptures can be found at locations across the city including the Riverside Museum, the Science Centre, Kibble Palace, Milngavie and Giffnock, not to mention a giant Scottie sitting pretty as far as Paisley Abbey.
After the trail
The trail will run for a full eight weeks until 16 August. The Scotties will then be gathered in one place for a ‘Farewell Weekend’ at the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust Bridgeton on 29-30 August.
The Scotties will then be auctioned to raise funds for Maggie51ɫAPPs to help us reach as many people as possible living with cancer.
